About KiMuPe

KiMuPe* is an approach that reconsiders the role of the body and body movement in instrumental music teaching and learning. It is being developed by Luc Nijs, music researcher, educator and performer.
Taking into account the increasing empirical evidence on the role of the body in musical interaction, this approach adheres to the idea that instrumental music education cannot (or maybe: can no longer) neglect the importance of integrating an “education of the body” that goes beyond the mere instrumentalist approach to body and instrument as advocated by the traditionalist master-apprentice model of instrumental music teaching and learning.

* KiMuPe is the acronym for kinemusical performance. Interestingly, in Maori language it means: give a spoken or written account of something that one has observed, heard, done, or investigated. In this way, this acronym beautifully combines the essence of this artistic research project: the artistic process (kinemusical performance) and sharing one’s meta level findings and insights with the community.
